AI agent or chatbot? The difference is whether the work gets done

A chatbot answers. An agent answers, looks things up, updates systems and books.

The one question that separates them

After the conversation ended, did anything change in your systems? If a record was created, a slot was held, a status was read from your own database, you have an agent. If the conversation ended and nothing moved, you have a chatbot.

That is the whole difference, and it is the difference that decides whether your team still has work to do afterwards.

What a chatbot does well

A chatbot answers approved questions instantly, at any hour, on any channel, at very low cost. If your problem is the same twenty questions filling your inbox every day, a chatbot genuinely solves it.

It will not qualify anyone, look anything up, or book anything. Someone on your team still has to do all of that, from scratch, after the chatbot hands over.

What an agent adds

Everything a chatbot does, plus the part that removes work from your team.

  • Reads the customer, order, vehicle or listing from your own systems instead of guessing.
  • Qualifies the enquiry and collects the details that were missing.
  • Proposes real slots from your live calendar and holds the one the customer picks.
  • Creates and updates permitted records inside the scope you agreed.
  • Follows up on its own until a human takes over.
  • Escalates an exception to the right person with the full conversation attached.

Why the boundary matters

An agent with write access to your CRM, calendar or order system is a different risk from a chatbot that only talks. It needs a written scope, named approval points, and an audit trail that shows exactly what it did and why.

Without those three things, autonomy stops being useful and starts being a liability. With them, it is the reason an agent can be trusted with real work.

Which one you need

If enquiries get answered but nothing moves afterwards, you need an agent. If your team is buried in repeat questions and nothing else, a chatbot may be enough, and we will tell you so rather than sell you more.
